5 Best Ways to Get an Opening Slot for a National Act

Updated: Sep 7, 2022

Do you think you are ready to perform in front of thousands? Opening up for a national act can be a HUGE opportunity for you as an artist. Some artist even get discovered this way and invited for the remainder of tour. Skies the limit when you get yourself in front of people who matter. But how do you go about getting booked? Rather you are an artist or a manager reading this, here are some tips on how to book that first huge gig. Good Luck!

1. Search for what artists are coming to cities near you.

Search on websites like Live Nation, Ticket Master, Facebook, and Eventbrite to find the hottest shows coming to town. Make sure the headliner is within your genre and make sure they don't already have a opener. Once you have some potential concerts, find contacts to the event promotor and contact them via phone or email. Note that phone calls are the most efficient and personable, but emails work as well.

2. Contact venues nearby to see if they have any concerts coming up that need openers.

Search for local venues nearby and ask the owner via phone, email, or even in person if they have any concerts that need opening acts. This is a great and easy way to not only secure an opening act but also to make a valuable connection and hopefully get booked even more in the future.

3. Have an EPK ready

An electronic press kit (EPK) is SO important and often looked over with musicians. An EPK is basically your resume as an artist. If you want to get booked for something or just want to prove all of your talents, just send anyone an EPK. Industry professionals require it and its just easier on the artists to have it ready. The EPK should include photos and videos of you performing as well as quality stats of your music and performances. Check out our EPK creation service for a quick turn around on a professional EPK.

4. Have an established record of solid stage presence

Before you are ready to hop on stage in front of thousands of people, make sure you have had a good track record of performing in front of smaller crowds. This helps in many ways. This helps with your ticket sales, because fans will be excited to see you perform again. It will help with your overall comfort and swag onstage. It will help promoters around your city know and trust you put on a good show. It will also provide you with content and proof of the quality of your performances. Use these smaller shows to perfect your overall live show. That way, promoters won't be able to say no.

5. Prove that you can sell tickets

Just like everything else in America, concerts are a business first. Promoters and venues are always looking for what sells and who can bring in the most people to each show. If you have a large fan base, even if its family and friends and can prove or promise at least 20-30 ticket sales, you instantly become an asset for a promoter. If you are confident in your ability to sell tickets, you can use it as leverage to book big shows. ESPECIALLY if you can bring in fans consistently. This is a hidden but very important key to getting booked. So round your team up and sell tickets to the small shows to prove you bring in crowds. It'll benefit you have your own crowd as well. That way you look popular already and other people will follow.
